The Mirror Remembers

This piece portrays Kuchisake-Onna in a rare moment of reflection, haunted by memories of her former life as a courtesan. Rooted in Japanese folklore, she is said to have been a woman disfigured by her samurai husband after he discovered her seeking solace in other men’s company during his prolonged absences. In my interpretation, her descent into legend begins not with vengeance, but with longing—a woman driven by loneliness into the life of a courtesan.
The mirror in the artwork becomes a symbolic threshold between two possible fates. One side reflects a version of her who rose to prominence as a beloved courtesan, adorned in beauty and admiration, perhaps having found the affection she once yearned for. The other side reveals her tragic reality—forever trapped in sorrow and rage, transformed into the vengeful spirit of the myth. This duality captures the fragile line between love and loss, memory and myth.

I created this illustration as part of a collaborative project between the Drawing Club and the Japanese Club for our school’s Entrepreneurship Day. As the leader of the Drawing Club, I proposed hosting an art exhibition with the theme of Japanese culture, offering both a visual showcase and themed products for sale. Our goal was to create an immersive cultural experience that celebrated traditional Japanese folklore while also engaging our school community through art and entrepreneurship.
This piece, inspired by the legend of Kuchisake-Onna, was one of the centerpieces of the exhibition. It served not only as a personal artistic expression but also as a bridge between storytelling and commerce—bringing myth to life through illustration, while also contributing to the collaborative effort of sharing and celebrating Japanese culture in a creative, accessible way.
